People tried to take their minds off of the war in a variety of ways: listening to the radio's variety shows and popular music on Your Hit Parade, watching films starring John Wayne, Greta Garbo, and Fred Astaire
and Ginger Rodgers, and dancing to the popular Big Band music of Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, and the Dorsey Brothers. In fact, Dorothy and Bernie met at a dance sponsored by the Navy Department. They hit it off immediately, and Bernie accepted Dorothy's invitation
to a home-cooked dinner.
On September 15, 1942, Dorothy and Bernie were married in Arlington, Virginia.
